This summer, we had the pleasure of having CJ Bahrke from the University of Tennessee–Knoxville as our architectural intern. As CJ prepares to graduate in 2025, this internship marked the final chapter in his college experience. We asked him to share a few thoughts on his time with us—and here’s what he had to say:

"This summer at Comma Designworks, I was blessed with the opportunity to not only learn and gain experience but create relationships that I will appreciate forever. Day one, I was introduced to the charismatic Comma team. Everyone showed immense support and kindness which gave me a since of home from the very beginning. Coming from a family of finance majors, I did not know anything about the professional architecture world, but Comma took me in and showed me how the architectural firm operates.

Experiences come in many forms: visual, hands on, auditory, research, etc. Comma allowed me to experience it all. In just three months, I worked on existing and new building projects, researched regenerable energy and net-zero projects, went on site visits, learned new useful programs, collaborated closely with a professional architect, networked, and made new friends. I also was able to start on my AXP and get plenty of hours. Comma never fell short of showing me their 100% effort, so I had no excuse to not to do the same. They made it easy.

When it comes to work/life, I never felt more comfortable in an office than this one. Previous office jobs felt boring, repetitive, and draining; however, Comma is different. After my first 2 months, I was able to take a weeklong trip, by the end of it, I genuinely felt happy to show up to the office the next morning. What made it even better was to be greeted by smiles, clapping, and excitement to see me return. Huge thank you to Carpenter Marty Transportation and Comma Designworks for this incredible opportunity. From great memories to great experiences, I will always cherish this summer."

We’re grateful CJ chose to spend his summer with us and are proud to have been part of his journey. We wish him all the best as he steps into the next exciting chapter of his architectural career.
